Acer Stream Android 2.1 smartphone

James Tromans over at our sister AndroidAuthority.com site has put together a review of the Acer Stream, an Android 2.1 smartphone with a 3.7-inch AMOLED(INFO) touchscreen display and a camera that can record 720p video.

James likes the design of the phone, particularly the build quality, but thinks that the phone isn't quite sexy enough to compete with the other heavyweights in the high-end smartphone sector. Acer's custom user interface is useful and usable, according to the review, but again doesn't give Android users what they expect: widgets. Battery life, however, does appear to be a strength of the device, and it is hard to argue with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and an HDMI output port, too.

But in the end, it seems that Acer still needs to do some homework before it can compete at the high end of the market.

T-Mobile G2 / HTC Desire Z Android smartphon

The T-Mobile G2 is a version of the HTC Desire Z that was built specifically for the U.S. market. It features the same base specs and hardware design, but offers a different software load and user interface tweaks.

The G2 is a very good all-around phone. It is great for messaging, thanks to its keyboard and large display, does well on the web with its Flash support, and has access to over 100,000 apps on the Android market. And did I mention the T-Mobile G2's awe inspiring HSPA+(INFO) data speeds?

But the camera is lack luster, and the phone just doesn't feel as snappy as its 1GHz empowered competitors. Sure the 800MHz Snapdragon CPU in the G2 is a second generation design, but that doesn't seem to be enough to make up for the 20% speed shortfall, though it does seem to help with power consumption.

It's a very good phone, it just isn't the best out there when it comes to many tasks.

Acer beTouch E110

The Acer beTouch E110 seems to be Acers shot at a budget phone just as other manufacturers have tried. It ticks all the right boxes for an entry level phone such as a small 2.8" (QVGA) screen , Resistive touchscreen and interestingly has no compass or accelerometer and no WiFi.

The Acer beTouch E110 does however sport Acers own UI including Acer multimedia and web widgets. Theres even Facebook and Twidroid Pro pre-installed to take care of all your social networking needs. Like to listen to music? - Well Acer has there own free streaming service "Spinlets" already on the handset and a built in FM Radio.
Shame about some of the specs, removing certain aspects to reduce the cost such as WiFi, the accelerometer and compass means this handset will fail to take full advantage of Android and won't be compatible with many of the apps which take advantage and use these features. The beTouch E110 does however look stylish and will come in Black & Dark Blue so take your pick if your still interested!

Acer A1

The A1 was Acer's first Android powered handset and the first Android phone to be powered by a 1GHz snapdragon processor. With this kind of power onboard it caused a lot of buzz, somewhat setting a standard for other higher-end phones that is availible today.

Months before Acer even joined the Open Handset Alliance, rumors swirled that they would launch an Android Phone before the end of 2009. Looks like the rumors were right! The phone was officially announced in October of 2009 as the Acer A1 - a name that makes complete sense (A for Acer, 1 for first, relation to G1). The Handset was then uniquely only available to be purchased Sim-free & unlocked in Europe - no carrier has of yet decided to stock it and sell it on contract. However in December 2009 the A1 did go through the FCC with AT&T bands.
The Acer A1 is not all about looks with it's sleek design but packs some specs too. Featuring a 5 Megapixel camera with auto-focus and geo-tagging , a 3.5" inch TFT-LCD display with oil resistant coating (wouldn't want to get your new phone messy now would we?) Plus it has Acer's own UI, which is basically the stock Android UI with some "enhancements". It also features a hardware camera button for pic snapping prowess.
With Acer's choice of a sleek design, speed and Android they have a great combination sure to please with the A1.
